The Flintstones' 50th anniversary has been celebrated with a unique Google Doodle

The search giant has continued its long-running tradition of replacing its multicoloured homepage logo to mark important events and anniversaries. 

The latest doodle pays homage to the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which aired its first episode on September 30 1960. 

It shows Fred Flintstone and friends packed into his Stone Age 'car' to make up the letter G, with houses and dinosaurs making up the remaining letters of the Google name. 

Starring comical caveman Fred Flintstone and his best friend Barney Rubble, the cartoon, set in the fictional town of Bedrock, instantly became a hit among children across the globe.

Of course, its Stone Age setting paved the way for a multitude of rock-based jokes, with 'Hollywood' becoming 'Hollyrock' and the town of San Antonio becoming ' Sand-and-Stony-o'. 

As well as following the entertaining life and times of the Stone Age superstars, the show also featured Stone Age re-workings of a number of modern technologies, often involving animals powering them, such as a woolly mammoth performing as a shower by spraying water with its trunk.

The show also included reference to a number of 60s legends, such as 'Mick Jadestone and the Rolling Boulders' and 'Cary Granite'. 

Despite ending its initial run on ABC in 1966, The Flintstones is still shown on a number of TV channels around the world. 

The show spawned a number of spin-offs and special episodes, including The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones (1987), as well as live-action films The Flintstones (1994) and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2001).

Google's tradition of marking important events with Doodles on its homepage has run since 1998, when owners Sergey Brin and Larry Page replaced the Google logo with a picture of a Burning Man, to notify the world that they had gone on holiday to the festival. 

More recently, Google celebrated its 12th birthday with an image of a cake, sporting a single candle. 

One of the most popular Google Doodles came in May this year, when the search engine released a fully playable Pac-Man doodle, to mark the historic game's 30th anniversary. 

It was claimed that the Doodle was responsible for almost five million wasted work hours. 

Other notable Doodles include a creepy logo to mark Frankenstein author Mary Shelley's birthday, a 'bouncing balls' logo and a colour-as-you-type version of the classic Google logo to mark the launch of Google Instant.

ใครที่ยังไม่ได้อ่านหน้าหนึ่งของ The Nation เมื่อวาน (จันทร์ที่ 2 สิงหาคม) ผมแนะนำให้หาอ่าน และตัดเก็บเอาไว้ให้ลูกหลานไทยได้ศึกษา พิจารณาไตร่ตรองกันให้เกิดประโยชน์กับประเทศชาติสูงสุด เพราะเป็นการอัดกัน “หมัดต่อหมัด” ระหว่างคนไทยกับฝรั่ง ระหว่างนักเขียนนักดนตรีระดับโลกที่เป็นคนไทยกับทนายความ และล็อบบี้ยิสตฝรั่งที่รับจ้างทำงานให้ ทักษิณ ชินวัตร คนแรกชื่อ “สมเถา สุจริตกุล” คนหลังชื่อ “โรเบิร์ท อัมสเตอร์ดัม” ประเด็นของการแลกเปลี่ยนอย่างดุเดือดที่ The Nation เอามาแบ่งเนื้อที่ให้คนละครึ่งหน้าที่หน้าหนึ่งนั้น คือคำตอบโต้ที่ทนายเชื้อสายแคนาเดียนคนนี้เขียน “สมุดปกขาว” หนา 75 หน้า พาดหัวว่า “The Bangkok Massacre: A Call for Accountability: The Thailand White Paper” อันเป็นการกล่าวหารัฐบาล อภิสิทธิ์ เวชชาชีวะ ว่าจะต้องรับผิดชอบต่อ “สังหารหมู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ” คุณสมเถา ไม่ใช่นักการเมือง ไม่ได้ทำงานให้รัฐบาล และเท่าที่ผมทราบก็ไม่ได้ชื่นชมคุณอภิสิทธิ์ ในลักษณะหัวปักหัวปำแต่อย่างใด แต่คุณสมเถา บอกว่าที่ต้องเขียนตอบโต้ฝรั่งคนนี้ก็เพราะเป็นคนไทย และอ่านภาษาอังกฤษได้สันทัดพอที่จะรู้ว่าอะไรเป็นอะไร อีกทั้งเอกสารชิ้นนี้ของทนายฝรั่งคนนี้ก็เผยแพร่ในอินเทอร์เน็ต ดังนั้น ใครต่อใครในโลกนี้ก็สามารถอ่านได้ ถ้าคนไทยที่รู้รายละเอียดพอสมควรในเหตุการณ์บ้านเมืองของตนเอง ไม่ออกมาเขียนโต้แย้งในประเด็นที่เห็นว่าฝรั่ง “มั่ว” ก็คงจะไม่ทำหน้าที่พลเมืองอันดีของประเทศชาติ หรืออะไรทำนองนั้น ถ้าจำได้ คุณสมเถา ได้เคยออกมาแถลงแจ้งความเห็นส่วนตัวของตน เกี่ยวกับการรายงานข่าวของ CNN และ BBC เกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์ความรุนแรงในประเทศไทย ช่วงเดือนเมษายนและพฤษภาคม ที่ผ่านมาแล้วอย่างชัดเจน และเมื่อพูดจาภาษาฝรั่งในฐานะคนไทยที่ไม่ได้รับจ้างรัฐบาล ก็ย่อมจะทำให้เกิด “เสียงของประชาชนคนไทย” ที่จะดังไปในเวทีสากลได้ไม่น้อย ครั้งนี้ คุณสมเถา ก็อาสาทำหน้าที่ “พลเมืองดี” อีกครั้งหนึ่งด้วยการออกมาใช้ความรู้ความสามารถ และความเข้าใจของคนไทยคนหนึ่ง เพื่อแย้งประเด็นของฝรั่งที่เขียนภาพของประเทศไทย ไปในทางเลวร้ายในเวทีสากล โดยที่ฐานะของฝรั่งคนนี้ไม่ใช่นักวิชาการ ไม่ใช่นักวิเคราะห์ข่าวและไม่ใช่ “ผู้สนใจเหตุการณ์บ้านเมืองของไทย” อย่างลึกซึ้งเหมือนฝรั่งหลายคน ที่ได้วิเคราะห์และวิพากษ์การเมืองไทยอย่างตรงไปตรงมา และคนไทยสามารถรับฟังได้ด้วยใจเป็นธรรม แต่นายอัมสเตอร์ดัม ประกาศตนเป็นทนายความที่ทักษิณจ้างมาอย่างเปิดเผย ดังนั้น ไม่ว่าแกจะพูดจะแสดงความเห็นอย่างไร คนไทยและคนทั้งโลกก็จะต้องเข้าใจในขั้นต้นเสียก่อนว่าแกเป็น “ลูกจ้าง” ของคุณทักษิณ หรือพูดให้ชัดก็คือสำหรับคนไทยทั่วไปอย่างผมแล้ว ไม่ว่าแกพูดอะไรเขียนอะไรก็สะท้อนความคิดความอ่าน และความต้องการของทักษิณเป็นธรรมดา ผมไม่มีเนื้อที่ในคอลัมน์นี้ที่จะวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาของวิวาทะระหว่างคุณสมเถา กับคุณอัมสเตอร์ดัม แต่โดยสาระหลักแล้ว คุณสมเถาบอกว่าทนายฝรั่งคนนี้เอา “half-truths” หรือ “ความจริงครึ่งเดียว” มาร้อยเรียงกันเพื่อให้คนเชื่อตามนั้น คุณสมเถาเขียนประโยคหนึ่งที่เจาะเข้าไปถึงหัวใจของเรื่อง นั่นคือ “A lawyer’s primary loyalty is not to the truth. It is to the client.” แปลตรงตัวก็คือว่า “สำหรับทนายความนั้น ความจงรักภักดีไม่ใช่มีต่อความจริง แต่มันเป็นความจงรักภักดีต่อลูกค้า” ขณะเดียวกัน นายอัมสเตอร์ดัม ก็แย้งกลับอย่างดุดันว่า คุณสมเถา เขียนตอบโต้ด้วยการใช้ “จินตนาการของนักเขียนนวนิยาย” เท่านั้นเอง “In Somtow’s (fantasy) world, criticism of Thaksin’s administration is a heroic act of patriotism, while criticism of Abhisit’s administration is a despicable act of treason…” เท่ากับบอกว่าในโลก (จินตนาการ) ของคุณสมเถา นั้น การวิพากษ์ทักษิณ เป็นเรื่องความรักชาติ ขณะที่การวิพากษ์อภิสิทธิ์ เป็นการทรยศต่อประเทศ รายละเอียดของบทวิพากษ์ของคุณสมเถา และคุณอัมสเตอร์ดัม ควรแก่การที่จะเป็นหัวข้อแห่งการถกแถลงของทุกวงกาแฟของคนไทย เพราะจะได้เจาะลึกถึงปัญหาของบ้านเมืองอย่างกว้างขวาง เพราะดูเหมือนจะไม่ยุติธรรมนักที่จะปล่อยให้คุณสมเถา ทำหน้าที่ “พลเมืองไทย” ที่คอยตอบโต้ฝรั่งล็อบบี้ยิสต์อยู่คนเดียว (ถึงขั้นที่คุณสมเถาต้องขอกำลังตำรวจคุ้มกันเพราะถูกขู่ฆ่าเอาชีวิต) คนไทยวิพากษ์กันเองอย่างไร ผมถือว่าเป็นสิทธิของเราในฐานะเจ้าของประเทศ แต่ผมยอมรับว่ารู้สึกแปลกๆ ที่ทนายความฝรั่งมาสอนมาสั่งมาฟ้องชาวโลกว่า “ไอ้ประเทศไทยนี่มันต่ำทรามจริงๆ” เออ แล้วทำไมคุณทักษิณ ต้องใช้ “นอมินี” ฝรั่งตอบโต้เรื่องการเมืองไทยกับคนไทย ผมไม่สามารถเข้าใจได้จริงๆ

Okay, so my local paper has decided to fan the flames by putting me and R.A. head to head on the front page.  Which suggests that there must have been no real news yesterday.

I'm a little peeved at being painted with a yellow background: I have not been uncritical of the yellows in the past.  But then again, I doubt that THE NATION is that impartial: their bio of me is all about my awards, while their summary of Amsterdam is about his clients languishing in Russian jails.  And they've used a more flattering picture of me.

In a week or so I'll probably reopen the comments section of this blog, as soon as I get over my fear.  There are plenty of venues for people to exercise their right (if any) to make death threats, but there's no reason why it should happen on webspace which I pay for!  It is interesting that while the blog entry provoked virulent attacks and threats, so far the email on the NATION piece (which is substantially the same) has been very supportive.  Those who read the morning people and those who troll the net at midnight are clearly members of a different demographic.
